Fodor's choice

Downstairs at the Pitcher Inn, this comfortable tavern has a tasteful lodge-style setting complete with a crackling fireplace. The bar menu is terrific—featuring items like seared scallops over sweet potatoes and bacon, and skirt steak with chimichurri—and the selection of wines and beers is excellent. There are billiards tables, dartboards, and table shuffleboard.

Citizen Cider

The tiny parking lot out front gets jammed after 5 pm, as the spacious "tasting room" of this hard-cider maker fills with exuberant young, hip professionals and students. Sample cider straight or in a dozen or so cocktails. There's a full bistro menu, too.

Falcon Bar

This sophisticated bar has live music on weekends. In summer, don't miss the wonderful outdoor deck. In winter, the place to be is around the giant Vermont slate firepit.

Higher Ground

When you feel like shaking it up to live music, come to Higher Ground—it gets the lion's share of local and national musicians.

Latchis Theatre

This movie theater's architecture represents a singular blending of art deco and Greek Revival style, complete with statues, columns, and 1938 murals by Louis Jambor (1884–1955), a noted artist and children's book illustrator. The Latchis hosts art exhibits, streams live events, and has four screening rooms. For a sense of the theater's original grandeur, buy a ticket for whatever is showing on the big screen. Though the space may not be a state-of-the-art cinema, watching a film here is far more memorable than at any multiplex.

McGrath's Irish Pub

On Friday and Saturday, listen to live Irish music and sip Guinness draft at the Inn at Long Trail's pub.

Mule Bar

This Winooski watering hole pours some of the best craft brews from around the state and is a must for aficionados. Outdoor seating and above-average bar bites seal the deal for its young and hip clientele.

Mulligans

Popular Mulligans hosts bands and DJs in the downstairs Green Door Pub on weekends. Upstairs, cozy up beside the fireplace with ribs, steak, and traditional fish-and-chips, or opt for tempura plates and sushi bowls from Mulligans' newest in-house offshoot, Snowfish Sushi.

Nectar's

Jam band Phish got its start at Nectar's, which is always jumping to the sounds of local bands, stand-up comics, and live-band karaoke and never charges a cover. Don't leave without a helping of the bar's famous fries and gravy.

Pickle Barrel Night Club

During ski season, this club has live music on Friday and Saturday. After 8, the crowd moves downstairs for dancing, sometimes to big-name bands.

Radio Bean

For some true local flavor, head to this funky place for nightly live music, an artsy vibe, and a cocktail. Performances happen every day, but Tuesday night is arguably the most fun, as the Honkey Tonk band blazes through covers of Gram Parsons, Wilco, and the like.

Two Brothers Tavern

Head to this watering hole for pub food a cut above the usual, plus local microbrews on tap in the sports-friendly bar. Look closely at the dollar bills pasted to the ceiling. There's even a marriage proposal up there, along with the answer. Food is served until at least midnight.

Union Underground

One of Manchester's hot spots, this part underground, part aboveground pub and restaurant offers lots of space, a sleek green-marble bar, craft beer, a pool table, and tasty classics with all the fixings.
