6 Best Restaurants in New York City, New York

Golden Diner

$$ | Lower East Side

Decor-wise it’s what you might expect from a diner: a few simple tables plus some counter seating looking over the grill, and the menu seems familiar but most items have a global twist that reflects the neighborhood, like a club sandwich made with chicken katsu (Japanese-style fried chicken), a Cobb salad with a Thai twist, and lemongrass-accented avocado toast.

Gracie Mews Diner

$$ | Upper East Side

A traditional New York diner, this place has been slinging the classics 24/7 since it opened in 1979. The two-egg breakfast with home fries, toast, and bacon is a sure bet, or try the blueberry pancakes, made with fresh blueberries. Other favorites among the regulars include 9-ounce beef burgers, a variety of steaks and chops, salads, and the triple-decker turkey club sandwich.

Junior's Restaurant

$$ | Downtown Brooklyn

Famous for its thick slices of cheesecake, Junior's has been a quintessential Brooklyn eatery since 1950, with a menu that also includes their famous steakburgers and matzo ball soup. Their Reubens and thick French fries are first-rate, as are the potato latkes and pretty much all the breakfast offerings. Sink into one of the vinyl booths and enjoy comforting diner and delicatessen classics in this brightly lit space.

Its latest incarnation, from Court Street Grocers, opened as S&P Lunch in 2022, with its retro atmosphere and menu intact. Seats at the long deli counter up front move quickly at breakfast and lunch; there's a smattering of tables at the back.

Tom's Coney Island

$ | Coney Island
Fountain sodas like the cherry-lime rickey or Tom's Famous Egg Cream are favorites at this boardwalk outpost of Tom's in Prospect Heights. As at the original, you can get all-American breakfast items like bacon, ham, or pork sausage omelets, corned beef hash, and silver dollar pancakes. Sit near giant windows overlooking the beach and boardwalk, or outside in good weather.

Tom's Restaurant

$ | Prospect Heights
Lines form down the block every weekend around midday for a spot at this snug, old-school counter spot with straightforward diner food such as scrambled eggs, deli sandwiches, and standout lemon-ricotta flapjacks (ask for flavored butters). The legend of Tom’s may outstrip the reality (contrary to myth, Suzanne Vega’s hit “Tom’s Diner” is not named for the place), but at least staffers offer the folks in line coffee, orange slices, and bacon or sausage bites while they wait. If your party is small enough, counter seats can usually be had more quickly.
