Baba Au Rum

Monastiraki Fodor's choice
Rum is the star at this trendy, popular bar in the heart of Monastiraki. All the liqueurs, syrups, and essences to flavor highly original and delicious cocktails are made in-house. The vibe is buzzy both indoors—where the decor has stylish yet quirky vintage touches like stained-glass lamps and antique drinking glasses—and out, where crowds gather especially on weekends. From tiki-inspired beverages to dark rum, chocolate, and lemon creations, you can spend hours experimenting here. Voted as one of the top 50 bars worldwide.

Balux Cafe—The House Project

Fodor's choice

This creative bar-café-restaurant comes in the style of an open-plan house, complete with playroom and pool area. It's the ultimate "all things to everyone" stop-by, and despite the pompous name and concept-pushing, it's great fun—albeit not cheap. By day, board games and pool tables are wheeled out in its cozy womb of a café, with a contemporary Greek menu on hand. A playground area takes care of the kids, while entrance to the beach has a fee (€8), with a private section (€12) for those who want more space to swim. Then, once the sun sets, the café becomes the perfect spot to slowly sip a cocktail on the beachfront as the evening gives way to live music (usually on Thursday) or local DJs. It's open year-round.

Cavalieri Hotel Bar

Fodor's choice

The rooftop bar and restaurant at the Cavalieri Hotel are hard to beat for views. Hotel guests happily mingle with locals as the scene slowly enlivens from a mellow, early-evening cocktail crowd to a more-energetic party atmosphere.

Minnie the Moocher

Kolonaki Fodor's choice
Just two minutes walk from Kolonaki Square, on the buzzy Tsakalof street packed with bars, this sleek, Prohibition-era-themed bar is always kicking with a mixed crowd sipping excellently mixed cocktails. Chesterfield-style sofas, high padded stools, and elaborately tiled floors as well as a vibrant soundtrack keep customers here until the late hours.

Oinoscent

Syntagma Fodor's choice
If you'd like to learn about Greek wine using both your mind and your taste buds, this modern bar with bold yellow walls and high stools is the place for you. Serving some 50 Greek labels by the glass among a selection of 500, this wine cellar--turned--wine bar/restaurant is popular for its high-quality wines, educationally minded staff (it is run by a team of wine experts), and foods that pair well with what you choose to drink.

Rapsodia Cafe Bar

Fodor's choice

This is Kalambaka's hot spot, with live bands and pool tables drawing in the local youth. It's a good place to head if you need a break from the quiet austerity of monastic visits. Oh, and if you get peckish, the food here also rocks. It's typical bar fare: burgers, nachos, and the like.

Santaroza

Exarcheia Fodor's choice
Dark, moody, and very atmospheric, with a long bar lined with leather stools upon which the city's hip and glamorous people sip their cocktails, this newish spot can easily become a favorite hangout. Drinks are accompanied by small cold cut meze instead of the usual bowl of nuts, and cocktails are expertly crafted. Music is very important to both the owners and customers here, and every Wednesday and Sunday DJs play vinyl-record sessions, while on other nights you'll hear everything from German B-movie soundtracks to spiritual jazz. To experience the bar in its full stylish glory, head here between 6–8 pm and sprawl out. After that it gets extremely busy on most nights.

Stoa Liabei

Fodor's choice

This Ottoman-era arcade has been transformed into the nightlife hub of the city. Bars and clubs, all with differing styles and music, now occupy every nook and cranny, and attract Ioannina's hip and trendy crowd. One can hop from Stoa Bar, playing deep house and funky sets, to Route 66 with its alternative, soul, and funky grooves. If it's cool yuppie vibes you're after, head to trendy Montage with its breezy uptown decor. In summer the action gets combustible, as these bars merge and mingle, since most of the action is outside. In winter they become more autonomous, shutting doors and pumping up that volume.

1866 Beer Bar

Decent beer is a rarity in Greece, where the grim spectre of Mythos always lingers. This cute stone bar, just up from the seafront, bucks the trend with a fair selection of international brews (think well-known Belgian ales and lots of Brewdog), good local beers (Nema, Sura), and the odd blast of live jazz. A cozy respite from the cafés blaring out live soccer on the main street. The burgers are good, too.

360 Cocktail Bar

Monastiraki

Afrikana

Gazi-Kerameikos
Get here before 9 pm for a drink and a chat, but after that be prepared for a fun night of bopping along to live jazz, funk, or blues performances as you sip your drink and maybe even sing along. There's always a happy atmosphere here, plus fresh talent, good drinks, and friendly service.
Ierofandon 13, Athens, Attica, 11854, Greece

Akouarela Restaurant Bar

Greek music—sometimes live—sets the lively tone: drop by for a drink or tuck into a large gourmet menu of meaty offerings Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. In the small hours, you can still get finger food, and some center tables might be removed to make room for dancing and, even better, for some legendary "flower wars" among happy club goers. Smart dress is strongly recommended.

Alexandrino

Exarcheia
This elegant Parisian-style bar and café is frequented by fashion personalities, academics, and thespians alike, who come to unwind over a few cocktails. During the day you'll find a great range of teas and coffees served in porcelain cups. Bistro-style food is also served.

Baba Bar

A few steps away from the nightlife bustle of Petrou Ralli's row of music-pumping bars, Baba Bar is still in the heart of the action, just slightly tucked away in a pretty little street that's lit by strings of soft white light bulbs. The bar's small, Cycladic-style interior can get packed with regulars that come back for their eclectic selection of cocktails with names like Pirate Martini, Rosemary Melon, Pina Rosa, and the signature rum Baba.

Base

By day its ground-floor terrace makes for a fine people-watching spot on Platia Agios Markos to sip your coffee; come nightfall the café's rooftop bar and DJs take over as the cocktails flow at this slick local favorite.

Bee's Knees

A gloriously friendly cocktail bar with an innovative list of ever-changing creations (from around €8.50), a penchant for prohibition-era slang, and good music. The terrace fills up quickly, so get there early, ask the waiter for their recommendation, and while away the evening people-watching on the square.

Beertime

Psirri
Over the last few years Greece has exploded with microbreweries, with even ordinary supermarkets now selling at least a handful of exceptionally fresh, sometimes unpasteurized and always interestingly flavored beers. The ideal place for choosing among hundreds of labels of Greek craft beers is this pub in Psirri, where you can relax for hours watching the world go by.

Bios

Gazi-Kerameikos

Cool architects and graphic designers, arty students and hipster DJs, revolutionaries and experimental philosophers: they all hang out in the cavernous basement of this Bauhaus building in the Kerameikos neighborhood, part of the greater Gazi district. Expect to hear the best electronica music in town. In summer, relish the view of the Acropolis from the postmodern, neon-lighted roof terrace. A handful of "multispace" imitators have emerged, offering offbeat film/video and music events in painfully hip industrial spaces—but Bios remains the standard.

Bitters

A welcome escape from the noisier café-bars in the city. This hip new effort—all red-brick and polished wood floors—caters to a more refined palate, with an excellent selection of well-mixed cocktails (from €9) and 300+ Greek wines. It's worth stopping by for brunch, too.

Blue Gin Bar

A vaulted cellar has been converted into this chic little bar-club on a trendy street next to the western wall of the Its Kale fortress. Local DJs and fun events nights make it popular with the town's students, but typically it only starts buzzing after 10 pm. It's known for great cocktails—try one with a Greek twist.

Booze Cooperativa

Syntagma

Laptops, coffee mugs, and chess sets cover the long wooden tables in this Central Athens joint by day. By night, chatty partygoers squeeze—booze in hand—into any spot they can find at this bar, which remains as edgily cool as when it first opened in the 1990s. It often feels like a laid-back party, as DJs navigate through rock, pop, and dance tunes and the multitasking bar hosts art exhibits, dance performances, art films projected on a massive wall, and theater installations. Wood details, low-hanging sculpture-lamps, and wax artworks give a warm feel to the high-ceilinged space.

The antiestablishmentary attitude of the cooperative means that smoking is permitted on the premesis

Brettos

Plaka

With walls adorned with brightly lit bottles in all colors of the spectrum, Brettos is mainly popular among tourists who have seen photos of it over the years. Locals who still choose to come here do so to relish the memories of the oldest distillery in town (going strong since 1909) and the second-oldest bar in the whole of Europe. The huge barrels store head-spinning spirits produced on the premises even today—ouzo, cognac, liqueurs (like top picks cinnamon or mango), tsipouro, and more. Order a mezedes platter to accompany your beverage of choice.

Byron's Wine Tasting Bar

An excellent spot, tucked into the alleyways south of the main square, and a welcome opportunity to acquaint yourself with the famous wines of the area. Owner Byron is a knowledgable, charismatic source; tastings (including three mezze) start at €20.

Café Bonjour

Catch a coffee or freshly squeezed mixed-fruit juice by day or a drink by night at at this popular hangout in tree-covered Lakka Square—and don't forget their croissants: the best in town!

Cave Bar

Far removed from the hot mess of the Laganas Strip, this cliff-cut bar offers a leafy hideaway in quieter Kalamaki. Visitors unwilling to climb the 100 yards to the bar are picked up by the roadside in a tiny pink buggy. Quiet cocktails in a garden setting await.

Cinque Wine Bar

Psirri
With wine-obsessed and highly knowledgeable owners, Cinque is a deli/wine bar where you can get to know some of the most unknown and fascinating Greek wines from around the country. The ambience is friendly, intimate, and warm and the staff is always happy to help you find the ideal label for your palate or to suggest pairings with the cheeses and cold cuts they serve. As this is a small place, book your table in advance.

Couleur Locale

Monastiraki
This youthful, scenic, and modish bar offers a different kind of local color than the usual walk-in or street-level place, as you'll have to enter an arcade selling antiques and take the elevator to the top floor of an old building to reach it. As you step out onto the roof, you'll come face to face with a stunning view of the Acropolis, the National Observatory, and the Anafiotika area—and after sunset all of them beautifully lit up. The cocktails are creative, the finger foods tasty, the music loud (there are regular DJ sets hosted), and the service friendly.

Denoar

In a creatively restored Ottoman-period marketplace, this cool bar-club is a mainstay of Ioannina nightlife. Theme nights, imaginative drinks, and a mixture of funk, rock, and dance music keep eclectic night owls flocking in.

Anexertasias 40, Ioannina, Epirus, 45444, Greece

Dizi Bar

With its extensive shady deck terrace, Dizi Bar is a favorite summer rendezvous for locals. Many nights feature live music or DJ-led dancing until late. Call owner Kostas to find out what's happening and when.

Draught Grill & Beer House

In truth, the selection here is nothing more than you'd find in most bars on mainland Europe, with a standard mix of familar Belgian brews by the bottle and a half-dozen mass-market lagers and German pilsners on tap. But in Kefalonia, where the ubiquitous (and tasteless) Mythos beer represents the sum of most bar owner's ambitions, it makes for an exotic find. The burgers aren't bad, either.
