Fodor's Expert Review Adam Thoroughgood House
Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.
Inland from the shore is the early-18th-century Adam Thoroughgood House, named for the prosperous plantation owner who held a land grant of 5,350 acres here in the early 1600s. This 45- by 22-foot brick house, probably constructed by a Thoroughgood grandson, recalls the English cottage architecture of the period, with a protruding chimney and a steeply pitched roof. The four-room early plantation home has a 17th-century garden with characteristic hedges. To get there, take I–264 Exit 17 (Independence Blvd.) 4 mi, turn right on Pleasure House Road, and right on Thoroughgood Drive.
