Fodor's Expert Review Café Gutenberg

$ Richmond American

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

If you're craving a cup of Illy Coffee and a decadent pastry, head for Shockoe Bottom. Directly across the street from the Farmers' Market, this café has a Viennese coffeehouse vibe, complete with loaner books and free Wi-Fi. Richmond residents have been drawn here for years, but now the food is the star. Extensive offerings for vegetarians and vegans include vegan biscuits and gravy and tofu sliders, but there are plenty of choices for carnivores. Chefs Jen Mindel and Garrett Berry use local and seasonal ingredients to create soul-satisfying meals from breakfast to dinner, like a mixed grill of spring lamb and curried chicken satay. There's also a good wine list and selection of beers from Germany and Belgium.
