Fodor's Expert Review The Red Fox Inn and Tavern

2 E. Washington St., Middleburg, Virginia, 20117, USA

Built in 1728 of local fieldstone, Mr. Chinn's Ordinary (tavern) was sited on the vast estate of Thomas, sixth Lord Fairfax. George Washington visited the popular tavern in 1748. During the Civil War the inn served as a headquarters and hospital for Confederates. Today it is on the National Register of Historic Places. Guest rooms are spread across four buildings, the Red Fox (where the tavern and restaurant are also located), the Stray Fox, the 12 East Building, and the Middleburg House. Bedside cookies, bathrobes, and romantic four-poster beds are extras that make for a special stay. The restaurant is one of the most popular places to dine in Middleburg.
