Courtyard Charleston Waterfront
35 Lockwood Dr., Charleston, South Carolina 29401, USAWhy We Like It
For substantially less money than you’d spend on a room in the historic district, you’ll get free parking, a sizeable pool, and views of the Ashley River. Even so, it’s just a short drive from Charleston’s historic sights and famed food-and-bev scene.
Fodor's Expert Review
Situated on the western edge of the peninsula, Courtyard Charleston Waterfront offers stunning views of the Ashley River and surrounding tidal marsh (in some suites, at least) just a few miles from the historic district. Inside, you’ll find friendly service, basic rooms, and light fare, while out back you can soak up sunshine and salty breezes on the riverfront pool deck.
Tip Take a stroll down the dock behind the hotel. At the end, you’ll find a convenient pair of rockers from which to watch the sun go down.

Room
Guest rooms are clad in comfortable albeit generic hotel furnishings and artwork. All contain a desk area, at least a small sofa for lounging, mini-fridge, microwave, and comfy bed—larger suites offer a separate sitting room and balcony, too.
You Should Know Though some rooms have a top-notch view of the picturesque Ashley River, many don’t. If water views are important to you, be sure and read the fine print when making your reservation.
Bathroom
An all-granite vanity and Paul Mitchell hair products spruce up the bathroom.
Lobby
Perhaps the freshest area of the hotel, the lobby is a sunny, welcoming space dressed in an array of tile and funky light fixtures. Various seating nooks provide plenty of room to kick back and relax as you wait for the shuttle or return from a day of sightseeing; free Starbucks roast is an invigorating perk.
Pool
The palm-lined pool (which is bigger than most on the peninsula) is surrounded by chaises and umbrellas and overlooks the Ashley River and marina. Well lit from within, it’s perfect for watching the sunset and night swimming—as is the nearby Jacuzzi.
Gym
A glass door to the outdoors brings a bit of natural light into the small, carpeted space, which offers a handful of aerobic machines and free weights.
Dining
Pre-prepared breakfast and dinner items are served in The Bistro: a light and bright dining room clad in midcentury-inspired furniture. A market offers grab-and-go snacks throughout the day.
Drinking
In the evening, a small selection of beer and wine is sold in the Bistro.
