Charlestown's secluded coastline makes it a great spot for swimming, sailing, surfing, beachcombing, bird-watching, and boating. Approximately 20% of Charlestown is conservation and recreation land, including Burlingame State Park, Ninigret Wildlife Refuge, Ninigret Park, and East Beach. The city regulates outdoor lighting to keep the night sky dark, so it's a fantastic place for sky watchers of all ages. Charlestown is also home to the Narragansett Indian Tribe Reservation, which holds the oldest recorded annual powwow in North America every August.
