Fodor's Expert Review The Vanderbilt

41 Mary St., Newport, Rhode Island, 02840, USA

Built in 1909 by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt for his mistress, Agnes O'Brien Ruiz, this Auberge Resorts property aims to impress—and does, with its exclusive mansion feel, enormous (and recently renovated) guest rooms, and elegant dining in the conservatory and garden. The rooftop deck has cocktail service and a spectacular view of Newport Harbor—it's a great spot for summer sunsets.

PROS

  • full-service spa
  • indoor and outdoor pools
  • boozy popsicles and cocktails served on the hidden Garden Terrace

CONS

  • on a narrow street that's busy in summer
  • somewhat sterile decor
  • minimum stay requirements may apply
