Olean, founded in 1804, is a community of 16,000 nestled in hills formed by receding glaciers. It's home to St. Bonaventure University, two community colleges, and manufacturers of assorted goods from Cutco knives to Drusser Rand turbines. The old public library, a National Historic Landmark facing the tree-lined town square, has been converted into a restaurant. From Olean you may follow a paved path—on foot, skates, or by bicycle—along the Allegheny River.
