Why We Like It

The views alone are worth a stay. Beyond the sleek rooms, this hotel impresses with its range of on-site nightlife options. Guests that want to dress up and dance the night away in the rooftop club will be just as welcome as those who would prefer to play ping pong and sip beer in the ground-floor beer garden. Beyond the property, easy access to the High Line Park and a range of quality restaurants and bars nearby make this a convenient pick.

Fodor's Expert Review

André Balazs’s architectural statement on the West Side has always been one of New York’s hottest hotels. The High Line Park runs directly underneath it, which definitely helps its popularity, but The Standard earns much of the buzz on its own with some of the most exquisite views in town and an authentic beer garden.

Room

With low platform beds, rooms are on the small side (even by New York standards), but floor-to-ceiling windows add a necessary extra sense of space.

Tip Rooms on higher floors offer much better views and are significantly more privacy; anybody casually walking the High Line Park can see right into lower floor rooms.

Bathroom

The highlights of the bathroom are neat little features like rain showers and hooded robes. Some rooms have bathtubs directly in the living space (as in not in the bathroom) with gorgeous views through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

You Should Know Showers are separated from the bedroom by little more than a glass partition. They really like bringing the bathroom into the bedroom at this place.

Lobby

There isn't much to the lobby, which is just a narrow space with some seating and desks for checking in. Don't be fooled by the lack of imagination here, though. The main scene at this hotel is in the bars, restaurants, and rooftop. You don't come here for the lobby.

Dining

The Standard Grill is a staple of the Meatpacking District, serving a wide-ranging menu including raw oysters, a whole roasted chicken for two, and grilled steaks. For a snack with a view, reserve a table at Top of the Standard, where they feature small bites like Korean fried chicken and foie gras toast. Another excellent dining option with a genuinely cool atmosphere is the German-inspired Biergarten, where they serve beer, giant pretzels, and sausages.

You Should Know The bars, restaurants, and clubs at this hotel draw significant crowds and the hotel can be noisy at night. If you want to avoid people, you have chosen the wrong hotel.

Drinking

Open-air in the summer and glass enclosed in the winter, the Standard Biergarten is a casual street-level bar with big steins of beer, picnic tables, and ping pong. Top of the Standard is known for its sunset city-skyline views and for people watching; cocktails are pricey but the atmosphere is worth a splurge. Le Bain is a rooftop bar and club with world-class DJs (arrive early to avoid lines).

What's Nearby

Getting Around

One extremely convenient perk of staying in lower Manhattan is the ability to walk everywhere, and The Standard, High Line is in an excellent position between several neighborhoods. Beyond the Meatpacking District, you can easily reach the West Village and Chelsea within 10 minutes. The subway is also nearby, at 8th Avenue and 14th Street, with A, C, E, and L trains offering access uptown, downtown, and to Brooklyn. You definitely won't be running out of things to do during your stay here, because everything is just a short walk away.

Restaurants

As mentioned before, The Standard, High Line is in the heart of the buzzing Meatpacking District--so, it's surrounded by really good food. For Italian food and a fancy setting, try the coastal-inspired fare at Santina (2-minute walk). A morning stroll on the High Line is better with coffee and fresh pastries in hand; stop into High Street on Hudson (5-minute walk) for some of the neighborhood’s best goods. Just about any craving can be sated at Chelsea Market (6-minute walk), an indoor market with several food and drinks options from L’Arte Del Gelato to Ninth Street Espresso to Num Pang Sandwich Shop.

Bars

Venture south into the West Village to sip a beer at beloved neighborhood joint, The Spotted Pig (10-minute walk). If hunger strikes, try their much-lauded burger. For a refined cocktail in a speakeasy setting, take a little stroll on over to Bathtub Gin (9-minute walk).
