This self-service bakery-restaurant is a neighborhood mainstay, with legendary (and giant) cookies, addictive pretzel croissants, and a salad bar that, while pricey, includes impeccably fresh options like baked salmon, roasted vegetables, and soups. There are tables in the somewhat cramped loft space if downstairs is full, as it often is at mealtimes. In winter, the bakery hosts a hot-chocolate festival; in summer, it's lemonade time.
