Riverhead

This is the gateway to Long Island's wine country, with the Peconic River and Great Peconic Bay bordering the town on the south and Long Island Sound to the north. The town was established as a farming village in 1792, and still enjoys an idyllic setting at the junction of the North and South forks. Once a pass-through on the way to the wineries, Riverhead has become a destination in itself, and the growing downtown has a selection of independently owned cafés, restaurants, and bars set against a backdrop of the Peconic River. Other attractions include an aquarium, water park, and music hall. Although agriculture remains a factor in its economy, the town's main industries today are shopping and tourism.
