Kancamagus Highway

In 1937, two old town roads were connected to create this remarkable 35-mile stretch of roadway, winding through some of the state's most unspoiled mountain scenery. Kancamagus (pronounced kank-ah-MAH-gus) was one of the first roads in the nation to be designated a National Scenic Byway. No gas stations, hotels, gift shops, or billboards mar the vistas. There are numerous pulloffs for trailheads leading to memorable hikes, both easy and strenuous, and you'll see one great view after another: the White Mountains, the Swift River, Sabbaday Falls, Lower Falls, and Rocky Gorge. The highest point is just under 3,000 feet, on the flank of Mt. Kancamagus, near Lincoln. On-site or online you can purchase a parking pass ($5 per day or $30 annually) for White Mountain National Forest lots and overlooks.
