Why We Like It

Private, luxurious and beautifully decorated, the Carriage House Inn is a romantic escape, but close enough to town to enjoy restaurants and attractions easily. Owners Peter Varns and Brian O’Connor go out of their way to make every guest comfortable and Peter’s cooking is outstanding, a definite benefit for guests.

Fodor's Expert Review

The Carriage House Inn, formerly the Captain Isaac H. Loveland Homestead, is an elegant historic property which was built around 1850. The six-room room inn offers a fresh, beach-resort décor, with all sorts of well-done updates, like a rooftop deck where you can spy the ocean, a sunny breakfast sunroom and a lovely outdoor patio. Outstanding breakfasts from co-owner and chef Peter Varns are a highlight.

Room

Contemporary, yet luxurious, walls are painted in soothing hues of cream, soft blues, and greens, and each is blessedly uncluttered by frills. The former stables contain three larger and more secluded rooms with high-pitched ceilings, fireplaces, and French or sliding-glass doors leading to private outdoor areas. Comfortable Sterns & Foster mattresses boast 600-thread count cotton sheets. Local Chatham chocolates await each guest upon arrival.

Tip The Chatham Light Room is the largest and most private room, with its own entrance, large gas burning fireplace and private garden space.

Bathroom

Private bathrooms with glass-enclosed showers are stocked with comfortable robes and high-end Parisian bath amenities.

Lobby

The living room, with a large fireplace and decorated with period furniture, is a lovely space to relax.

Dining

Breakfast begins with a fruit dish and a pastry, then a breakfast entrée, which alternates daily. Dishes might be rosemary and shallot frittata with fresh asparagus, individual chevre and dill quiches, maple baked oatmeal with bananas foster sauce and spiced rum or house-made organic oat and seed granola with local lemon-infused yogurt. At 3 pm, pastries and specialty refreshments, as well as coffee and tea, are offered.
