  • 1. Chester's Chophouse & Wine Bar

    $$$$

With a 1,000-bottle wine cellar and top-notch cuts of meat, Chester's is among Wichita's finest dining options. Leather booths, stone fireplaces, mahogany furnishings, and oak flooring cultivate a sophisticated dining space, and it's on the riverfront so there are fabulous views. Oysters are flown in from around the country, while the steaks and other meats are sourced from top purveyors, with entrées like "lacquered" pork chops with sweet-mustard aioli and ginger coleslaw. There is also a surf-and-turf option. Desserts like "bag-a-donuts" and limoncello cheesecake add a modern twist.

  • 2. Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper

    $$$$

It's well worth driving the 15 miles northeast out of Wichita in order to step into the Wild West era, with a cowboy supper followed by a staged musical performance hosted by the Prairie Rose Rangers. The all-you-can-eat dinner includes smoked brisket and sausage, baked beans, roasted potatoes, and homemade biscuits, followed by apple crisp topped with ice cream. Arrive early to explore the 77-acre grounds, where activities include a horse-drawn wagon ride and free cowboy movies (with popcorn) in Hopalong Cassidy Hall. This is also home to the Silver Screen Cowboy Museum, exhibiting movie props, posters, and other memorabilia from the golden age of westerns.

  • 3. Scotch & Sirloin

    $$$$

Since the late 1960s this has been a Wichita fine-dining institution, serving hearty comfort food in an elegant setting highlighted by red carpets and brass candelabras. Starters like escargot, oysters Rockefeller, and fried lobster strips set the tone for entrées that are more than run-of-the-mill steak-house fare: cuts of meat are sourced from within Wichita for dishes such as the highly acclaimed 14-ounce prime rib or lamb chops with mint jelly. The surf-and-turf special offers a choice of beef tenderloin or prime rib, with lobster tail or Alaskan king crab legs.
