When You Arrive
Honolulu International Airport is 20 minutes (40 minutes during rush hour) from Waikiki. Car-rental companies have booths at baggage claim; shuttle buses then take you to the car-pickup areas. An inefficient airport taxi system requires you to line up to a taxi wrangler who radios for cars (about $40–$45 to Waikiki). Other options include the city’s reliable bus system ($2.75) with stops throughout Honolulu and Waikiki, or the Roberts Hawaii shuttle ($16), which transports you to any hotel in Waikiki. Ask taxi drivers to take Interstate H1, not Nimitz Highway, or your introduction to paradise will be via Honolulu's industrial back side.
