The Bay House

42 Pukihae St., Hilo, Hawaii, 96720, USA, Hilo, Hawaii, USA

Why We Like It

We absolutely love the private lanais and their stunning bay views and lush surrounding foliage. It’s a great spot to watch the cruise ships come in and look for spinner dolphins while enjoying your breakfast, sipping coffee, or unwinding after a long day of adventuring.

Fodor's Expert Review

Overlooking Hilo Bay and just steps away from the Singing Bridge near Hilo's historical downtown area, this small, quiet bed-and-breakfast is vibrantly decorated, with Hawaiian-quilted beds and private lanai in each of the three rooms. An outdoor hot tub on the cliff offers excellent views of the bay below. A small continental breakfast buffet contains fresh fruits, breads, and coffee from the area—guests are invited to carry what they want from the buffet in a basket back to their lanai for a private breakfast.

You Should Know This B&B is in a great location – ocean views and walking distance to downtown Hilo where you can find charming shops stretched out over a few blocks, museums and discovery centers, and restaurants. Be sure to spend at least one morning on foot, exploring near your B&B.

Room

There are three spacious rooms in this lovely bed and breakfast, all with sitting areas in the room, ocean views, private lanai, and free Wi-Fi. The Hawaiian quilts and décor add multiple levels of charm and authenticity that makes these rooms a great place to spend your vacation down time.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are a good size, with standard sink, toilet, and tub/shower. The nice thing about the bathrooms is that the décor really carries over from the room, and the fresh flowers are an especially charming touch.

Lobby

This B&B allows guests to walk right in through the lovely front porch, where you’ll be greeted by your hosts.

Pool

There is no pool, but a shared cliffside jacuzzi with magnificent ocean views for guests to enjoy.

Dining

There is no on-site restaurant, but guests can enjoy a daily breakfast buffet with Kona coffee, tropical fruit, and pastries as part of their stay. The common area includes a refrigerator and microwave for guest use.

You Should Know Though there is a lovely breakfast provided daily, it is fairly light and somewhat redundant. If you have a physically active day ahead, be sure to grab second breakfast or some pre-lunch snacks.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

To get to and from your accommodations, a rideshare or cab from the hotel will do, but you’ll need a car to explore the island.

Restaurants

Head around to the other side of the bay for a laid back, but dressier dinner that features local flavors and a great sushi menu at Hilo Bay Café (6-minute drive). Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill (9-minute walk) is a fun, higher end restaurant set inside a former bank (the old vault is still there) with seafood specialties, Hawaiian favorites, and an excellent happy hour.

Bars

Coqui’s Hideaway (5-minute drive) has a fun sports bar that hosts live music, free pupus during happy hour, and a game room. Also try Pineapple’s (5-minute drive) for higher end cocktails made with fresh, local ingredients, stop by and dinner on their patio. Yes, they even have a cocktail served to you INSIDE a pineapple.
