Why We Like It

Comfortable, roomy accommodations at a nice price, lovely views, and a breakfast that you’d easily pay $20+ for at a hotel all make this B&B a nice choice for travelers looking for good value in their stay.

Fodor's Expert Review

Perfect for couples, Hale Hualalai offers two exceptionally large suites with exposed beams, whirlpool tubs, and private lanai, but perhaps most memorable is the food—owner Ricky Brewster was a chef at Four Season's Hualalai Resort's Beach Tree restaurant. His breakfasts are as varied as they are delicious, reflecting individual guest preferences—from Italian margarita frittatas with tomatoes and herbs grown on-site to Punaluu sweet-bread French toast with Tahitian lime gastrique and crushed pecans. Ricky even grows and serves his own Kona coffee. Each 650-square-foot suite has a private entrance and sunset views.

You Should Know The place can be a little tricky to find in the dark, so try to plan to arrive during the day or be sure to call your hosts for specific directions or print the detailed directions from the website.

Room

The Honu and Kula suites are identical and created specifically for the bed and breakfast. At 670 square feet each, both are very roomy and feature wet bar, mini fridge, separate entrance, and private lanai. Furnishings and décor are a bit plain a sparse, but your west-facing sunset views will help to make up for it.

Bathroom

In addition to large tile shower, each private bathroom has a large jacuzzi tub.

Dining

There is no on-site restaurant, but a lot of what you’re paying for at this B&B, besides a comfy night’s rest, is the privilege of basically having a private chef with over 15 years of high end cooking experience.

Tip Don’t be shy – Ricky and his family are charming and informative hosts, so be sure to spend some time talking story with them, especially over breakfast.

Getting Around

You will need a car to get to the B&B and around the island.

Restaurants

At Lava Lava Beach Club (35-minute drive) you’ll find a menu that includes happy hour specials, daily fish preparations, and island twists on classic foods like hamburgers and ribs all right on the beach. The bar is also a big draw, with delicious and strong cocktails (the “Big Bamboocha” will definitely get your vacation started well) and a nice wine menu. If you booked a Hawaiian vacation mostly because you love poke and seafood, you’ll definitely want to stop by Sun Dried Specialties (25-minute drive) – the name might not leave much of an impression, but the food definitely will.

Bars

The Big Island’s newest brewery, community-owned Ola Brewery (13-min drive), offers brewery tours and tastes. Be sure to try the White Pineapple Cider! With lava flow and mai tai flights (they have 10 different kinds), there’s plenty to love at Don’s Mai Tai Bar (16-min drive). Thursday nights are particularly fun as they host a weekly Hawaiian music series.
