Fodor's Expert Review Johnny Harris

$$ Victorian District American

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

It opened in 1924 as a small roadside stand across from Grayson Stadium, and since then Johnny Harris has grown into one of the city's most beloved mainstays. Expect a trip down Memory Lane, as the ambience here is straight out of the 1950s. You'll have to go in the evening to check out the domed ceiling's twinkling lights, shedding a glow on the the 360-degree mural of rural landscapes below. The menu is pure Lowcountry, including favorites like Brunswick stew, Southern fried chicken, and barbecued meats spiced with the restaurant's famous barbecue sauce. The hickory-smoked pork (watch it cooking over the pits) is a particular treat. Don't forget to buy a bottle of sauce to take home with you.
