Why We Like It

Quiet, cute, and close walking distance to the beach and other points of interest, the Lighthouse Inn is in a league of its own on Tybee Island.

Fodor's Expert Review

This yellow-and-white frame house is a quiet getaway, a place to unplug and renew, to sit on the front porch and make the rocker creak while watching the sun drop. There are absolutely no pretentions here, no airs, just the salt breeze. Tucked away on a lovely residential street in the Fort Screven Historic District, it's just minutes from a magnificent beach and the Tybee Island Lighthouse. Birders come with their binoculars because of the island's abundance of feathered specimens. Each of the rooms of the onetime officer's home is tastefully—not overly—decorated with appealing original art, and overlooks the treetops.

Tip This is a quiet residential neighborhood near the lesser-trafficked North Beach. You'll get a more peaceful night's sleep here than in any of the beachfront hotels.

Room

After recent renovations under new ownership, guest rooms retain their quaint, relaxing charm with a fresh coat of paint and updated furnishings, fixtures, and linens.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are bright and kept tidy and well-stocked with toiletries, plush towels, and cloths.

Tip If you're likely to enjoy a soak in a claw-foot bathtub, try to book either the Blue Room or the Evening Light Room.

Lobby

The wrap-around front porch is a particularly inviting proposition as you enter, and guests will often congregate there together to while away the hours. The small parlor and reception areas are small and tastefully outfitted with a piano, vibrant artwork, and comfy chairs.

Pool

The Inn has a small pool and hot tub for guests to enjoy.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Most people drive around Tybee because the points of interest and dining options are far enough away, but staying at the Lighthouse Inn Bed & Breakfast affords you an atypical number of sightseeing and dining options within close walking distance. There are also pedicab drivers for hire and beach bikes for rent.

Restaurants

North Beach Bar and Grill (3-minute walk) is located by the North Beach parking lot, so it feeds a host of sand-weary sun-worshipers every day. There is often live music playing in the casual indoor/outdoor restaurant. Lots of tasty fried seafood options. The Crab Shack (7-minute drive) is eclectic, to say the least, with its menagerie of exotic birds, garden-variety cats, and baby alligators. But the marina view past rambling live oaks draped in twinkling lights is stunning, and the low country boil platter is a true taste of the region. Looking for a truly excellent dining experience? Don't let its strip-mall location fool you: the Sundae Cafe (5-minute drive or less) is divine. Don't miss the seafood cheesecake appetizer.

Bars

Friday night bingo is a solemn tradition at the Tybee Island American Legion (1-minute walk), as are dirt-cheap drinks and fantastic people watching. A-J's Dockside Restaurant (9-minute drive) will dish you up some tasty fried foods, but its real charm lies in its marshside location—perfect for a cold beer and a sunset. For those oenophiles who can't be parted from their Super-Tuscans, 80 East Gastropub (7-minute walk) is the place to be. It's dark, secluded from pier foot traffic, and a bit more sophisticated than many of the bars on Tybee.
