Movies Filmed in Savannah

In the 1970s, some scenes from the legendary television miniseries Roots were shot at various spots around Savannah. In 1989 the Academy Award–winning film Glory, starring Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman, was filmed near Fort Pulaski. One of Savannah's most famous film appearances came in 1994, when scenes for Forrest Gump were set on the north end of Chippewa Square. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was filmed in the Historic District in 1997, and two years later The General's Daughter was shot at Wormsloe Plantation. The Legend of Bagger Vance, starring Will Smith, brought film crews to Savannah and Jekyll Island in 2000. Robert Redford's historical drama about Mary Surratt, The Conspirator, used Savannah for its backdrop in 2009.

Sparks flew between Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth in 2010's beachside romance The Last Song, and Alan Rickman and Harry Potter co-star Rupert Grint came to town to shoot the story of legendary New York City nightclub CBGB in 2012. Broughton Street was transformed into Salty Shoals for box office smash The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, starring Antonio Banderas, in 2015. Funnymen Adam Sandler and David Spade filmed The Do-Over in 2016—Spade even surprised locals with an impromptu comedy set at local dive The Wormhole.

In 2019, Disney shot its live-action version of Lady and the Tramp throughout the Historic and Victorian Districts, so you may see some homes, buildings, and alleyways you recognize when you watch the film.

Tybee Island has welcomed heartthrob visitors like Channing Tatum for Magic Mike XXL and Zac Efron and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for 2017's Baywatch.
