Why We Like It

Being that this is a smaller property, and everyone is here with the same objective (to get wet), we find it creates a uniquely inviting atmosphere. Plus, the staff is so friendly and knowledgeable, it just adds to the positive vibes. We know the rooms could be updated, and the Wi-Fi could be stronger, and the beach area really isn’t much of a beach, but you’re here to explore the reefs, and with that being the goal, this place is pretty awesome.

Fodor's Expert Review

With the words ‘dive resort’ in the name, you can bet that this property is set up to function as such. Two boats moor on site and depart every day to famous Key Largo dive sites like Christ of the Deep, the Spiegel Grove, Molasses Reef, and others. Every member of the hotel staff is a certified diver. The property is super casual, a bit old-school, and that’s why divers like it.

You Should Know It's not automatically included, so spend the extra money for a dive guide to be in the water with you. It’s worth it if you're a beginner.

Room

Stay upstairs or down in a variety of rooms, from single and small to an oversized waterfront apartment with a full kitchen. Whichever you choose, you’ll get blindingly colorful bedspreads with matching curtains, pastel-painted walls, plain tile floors, white rattan furniture, and an old clunky TV. If you stay upstairs, walk softly, it sounds like a marching band to those below.

Tip Try to avoid a room with a pool view. You’ll never be able to open your curtains, unless you don’t care if strangers can see your every move.

Bathroom

Nothing fancy, kind of like visiting grandma’s house with older vanities and poor lighting, although some units have newer tile in the shower area.

Lobby

The front desk is located inside their onsite dive shop. So, while you’re registering, you can shop for all kinds of dive gear, or pick up a souvenir t-shirt.

Pool

Overlooking the bay, their heated pool is simply average. The deck area is narrow on the sides, with not much room to maneuver around the dated lounge chairs.

You Should Know Sometimes the pool is used for diving lessons and certification classes.

Dining

There are no restaurants onsite but there are plenty nearby and there's a BBQ by the pool.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

You’ll be able to walk to local restaurants, but to explore the area further, you’ll need to drive a car or take an Uber.

Restaurants

You’ll find more upscale dining at Sundowner’s (3-minute drive) with indoor and dockside dining. Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill (5-minute walk) has casual waterfront dining. We love the pecan-crusted snapper. The Fish House (3-minute drive) is hands down the best place for seafood in Key Largo. Fresh catch Matecumbe-style is a winner, so is the pan-sauteed.

Bars

One side of Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill (5-minute walk) is a sports grill--and the rosemary roasted chicken wings are fantastic. They also have live music under the tiki bar. The Caribbean Club (4-minute walk) is a pretty famous dive bar thanks to Humphrey Bogart, and worth a visit just to say you’ve been there.
