Why We Like It

A quirky, elegant, and totally unique property, the Mayfair gives guests a glimpse of what Miami was before its buildup and renovation. Its unique rooms are spacious and comfortable and Coconut Grove is far removed from South Beach's nightlife--in a very good way.

Fodor's Expert Review

Some 30 years strong, the five-story Mayfair Hotel & Spa still reflects Coconut Grove's bohemian roots, best exemplified by its eclectic exteriors: handcrafted wooden doors, one-of-a-kind decorative moldings, mosaic tiles inspired by Spain's Alhambra, and Gaudi-like ornaments adorning the rooftop pool deck. Rooms are individually named and are found in one of two wings: one surrounding an open courtyard, the other a covered atrium. The water gardens and staircases within the courtyard offer a quiet contrast to the bustle of Miami's busier downtown and beach areas. Most rooms have balconies with Japanese soaking tubs, though the views are rather limited by neighboring buildings. Interestingly, rooms are individually shaped, together uniting on each floor in a jigsaw puzzle formation. The popular rooftop area encompasses a swimming pool, eight cabanas, a fireplace, and a full bar that's open until late evening.

Room

Rooms and suites reflect the neighborhood, Coconut Grove is the greenest and lushest area in Miami. Rich dark Mahogany woods play with beige accents and pops of color. Rooms and suites offer ample space, Wi-Fi, a mini-bar, coffee maker, desk, and balcony overlooking either the tree-lined streets or the property's courtyard.

Tip The Mayfair treats your pooch like a star with special treats, a pet bed, and Fido's own bottled water and bowl. The fee is $30 per day per pet and dogs must be under 25 pounds (two pets maximum per room).

Bathroom

Stone bathrooms feature oversized Roman soaking tubs and marble accents.

Lobby

The lobby is small yet elegant. Glass doors lead to a tropical courtyard.

Pool

A heated rooftop pool offers a bird's eye view of the Coconut Grove Marina. Enjoy a dip or lounge in one of the eight private cabanas available for rent. On weekends, keep your eyes and ears out for pool parties with DJs.

Spa

The 4,500 square foot Jurlique Spa offers massages, facials, and an after-treatment lounge.

Gym

A fitness studio is open 24 hours for guests.

Dining

Mayfair Kitchen offers healthful fare, but the best part is the restaurant's wood-burning oven that turns out perfectly roasted cauliflower, fish, and other meats.

Drinking

The bar is located inside Mayfair Kitchen, and is usually filled with after work crowds. Since the hotel is a wedding favorite, on weekends you might see the bride and groom stop in for a few after-reception cocktails.

Getting Around

Most Coconut Grove shops and restaurants are easily reached on foot -- and you'll want to walk around this charming neighborhood filled with mature trees and small boutiques.

Restaurants

The Spillover (5-minute walk) offers fresh seafood paired with a large selection of meads and ciders. Bombay Darbar (2-minute walk) features authentic Indian fare so delicious the owners had to move from its original location to a space three times bigger. Hint: Listen to the server when he tells you a dish is spicy (though all items can be customized to the level of heat you like).

Bars

Sandbar Sports Grill (5-minute walk) is the place to go when you want to watch the game with a few beers. It's quite the local scene. The Grove Spot (5-minute walk) offers its own ale and live music most evenings.
