Once an apple-packing shed, the Apple Shed has been restored and remodeled into a series of unusual gift shops and arts and crafts galleries. An attached tasting room features their own locally produced Williams Cellars wines and Snow Capped Ciders, while the deli serves breakfast Thursday through Sunday and Mexican fare and sandwiches and salads for lunch and dinner daily.

Alida's Fruits

This market sells a wide range of fresh and dried fruits, including cherries, pears, apricots, and peaches, as well as chocolate-dipped fruits, nuts, and locally produced jams, jellies, and syrups. During the growing season, the market sells fresh produce as well. There's a second location in Grand Junction.

Two other galleries also share the space: RWR Roland Reed Gallery, which features Native American photographs from the turn of the 20th century, and R-Diamond Collection, devoted to Western contemporary art.

Jewelry and Fossil Shop of Steamboat

The generic-sounding name doesn't do justice to the intriguing and appealing collection of Native American turquoise, locally crafted jewelry, and museum-quality fossils and rocks (including dinosaur eggs and megalodon teeth as well as chair-sized pieces of quartz) housed here. It's fascinating to browse even if you're not in the mood to buy.

Off the Beaten Path

Off the Beaten Path is a throwback to the Beat Generation, with poetry readings, lectures, and concerts. It has an excellent selection of New Age works, in addition to the usual best sellers and travel guides. The on-site coffee shop is the best in town, with fresh baked goods and sandwiches. Hours vary by season so call ahead to confirm.

Downtown Steamboat's Old Town Square is a collection of upscale boutiques and retailers. There are also plenty of places to sit and people-watch or get a good cup of coffee.

The huge, fourth-generation-run operation sells local products and will take you on a tour of the place if you ask. The rustic taproom sells apple cider, apple juice, hard cider, and local wines.

Wendll's

In this remodeled 1904 building on Market Street, you can buy an eclectic mix of clothing, housewares, body-care products, greeting cards, Brighton jewelry, and Native American turquoise and sterling silver from Arizona. The coffee shop has morning comfort foods like oatmeal and biscuits and gravy, as well as lunchtime sandwiches until 2 pm every day but Sunday.
