Independence

Named for a military outpost that was established near here in 1862, sleepy Independence has some wonderful historic buildings and is worth a stop for another reason: 6 miles south of the small downtown lies the Manzanar National Historic Site, one of 10 camps in the west where people of Japanese descent were confined during World War II.
