Fodor's Expert Review The Pelican Inn
10 Pacific Way, Muir Beach, California, 94965, USA
From its slate roof to its whitewashed plaster walls, this Tudor-style inn built in the 1970s is English to the core, with its cozy upstairs guest rooms (no elevator) and draped half-tester beds, a sun-filled solarium, and bangers and grilled tomatoes for breakfast. Downstairs, a weathered little pub pours ales and ports; the Snug offers a private fireplace lounge for overnight guests; and a tavernlike restaurant serves fish-and-chips and ale-steamed mussels in candle-lit nooks. Lunch is served, too—a good thing, since your nearest alternatives are miles away via winding roads.
PROS
- five-minute walk to the beach
- great bar and restaurant
- peaceful setting with a fun personality
CONS
- 20-minute drive to nearby attractions
- rooms are quite small and rustic
- prices are as steep as more luxurious destinations
