Why We Like It

The Homewood Suites San Diego Airport is an ideal place to settle down for a longer visit, especially for families. The hotel features comfortable, attractive suites with private bedrooms, as well as living areas with full kitchens, which comes in handy if you’re trying to feed an army of kids. Right on the waterfront, with bike and walking paths running along the bay, the hotel takes playing in the sun very seriously, with a pool, basketball court, bocce ball, and kayak rentals. Plus, many San Diego attractions are a 15-minute drive from the hotel, and since the parking is free and the airport is minutes away, renting a car is easy.

Fodor's Expert Review

When it comes to traveling with a family or group, Homewood Suites by Hilton is an ideal solution, especially for longer stays. The hotel’s one- and two-bedroom suites feature pleasant contemporary decor and include a living area with a sleeper sofa and a full kitchen. In the Point Loma neighborhood, a few minutes from the airport, the hotel is not far from Liberty Station, a former naval training center turned mixed-use development with some great spots to grab a bite or a beer. There’s also plenty to do on the waterfront property, including a pool and whirlpool, a basketball court, and bocce ball. Walking and bike paths run right past the hotel along the bay and you can also rent kayaks or paddleboards. Fisherman’s Landing, where sportfishing and whale-watching excursions depart, is also nearby. Free parking is a plus.

You Should Know The hotel is technically on the San Diego Bay -- but it’s actually on an inlet of the bay. It’s still a nice waterfront though.

Room

The suites feature contemporary decor with a beachy vibe -- a palette of taupe, yellow, and blue evokes the bay and coastal artwork hangs on the walls. It’s exactly what you would expect from a mid-range extended-stay hotel. The kitchen is nice, with dark wood cabinets and a full-size stainless steel fridge.

You Should Know The kitchen table in the one-bedroom suite only seats two -- and one of the chairs is the desk chair.

Bathroom

Contemporary bathrooms have a separate vanity and a shower-bathtub combo.

Lobby

The cheerful decor in the lobby reminds you that you’re close to the bay, with a bright turquoise sofa that’s the color of the sea and sky and bright yellow ottomans that nod to the sun. The furniture is more for show than long-term lounging, though.

Pool

A large pool is lined with chaise lounges and patio tables tucked beneath large sun umbrellas. You can catch a peek of the bay through a strip of gently swaying palm trees from the pool area, which also features a whirlpool.

Gym

The 975-square-foot gym has a treadmill, a crosstrainer, a stationary bike, a strength-training machine and some free weights.

Tip Wait, seriously? You’re on the waterfront in sunny San Diego. Get outside already!

Dining

The hotel offers a complimentary hot breakfast buffet daily.

Drinking

The hotel hosts an evening social with complimentary drinks for guests Monday through Thursday.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport. If you’re planning to do a lot of exploring during your visit, consider renting a car to get around; hotel parking is free and the rental drop-off center is minutes away. The hotel isn’t super close to major freeways, but it’s not that hard to get to them either. Interstate 5, or “The 5” as locals like to call it, is about 10 minutes from the hotel via Rosecrans Street. From there, you can access most attractions; it connects to other highways that blanket car-centric San Diego.

Restaurants

When it comes to food and drink, nearby Liberty Station (a mixed-use development on a former naval station) has got you covered. Breakfast Republic (5-minute drive or 20-minute walk) is a quirky spot with playful dishes like s’mores French toast, candied bacon, and pancake flights. They also serve craft beer and cocktails to make your rise-and-shine even finer. Officine Buona Forchetta (7-minute drive or 20-minute walk) serves up Italian fare like pasta and Neapolitan-style pizza in an industrial-chic setting. Try to snag the vintage Fiat converted into a table for two, or dine alfresco on one of the casual eatery’s two patios. There are options in Liberty Station that are closer to the hotel, but these are two of the best.

Bars

Stone Brewing, the San Diego-founded microbrewery that went mega-big-time, has quite the outpost at Liberty Station. Housed in a former U.S. Navy mess hall, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens (7-minute drive or 20-minute walk) has an industrial, modern-organic vibe with accents of metal, concrete, reclaimed wood, and live greenery. The 23,500-square-foot space (yes, you read that right) encompasses indoor and outdoor dining and bars, as well as a bocce ball court, an outdoor cinema space, and an 11,315-square-foot garden. The bar has 40 craft beer taps, which include many Stone brews. Another cool nightlife option for those without kids in tow is The LOT (7-minute drive, 20-minute walk), a 21-and-up swanky movie theater that screens current releases and serves booze and nibbles.
