Fodor's Expert Review

Located in Mission Valley, steps from a trolley station, this Doubletree by Hilton isn’t in the hippest location, but it’s very convenient and close to many San Diego attractions, including the world-class Fashion Valley shopping center. The attractive hotel features contemporary style, 400-square-foot standard rooms, and a large pool lined by palm trees. Hilton loyalists, in particular, will feel right at home here.

Tip Don’t even think of passing up the warm chocolate-chip cookie you’re offered upon check-in.

Bright, spacious bathrooms have walnut vanities and a white-tiled shower-tub combo.

The large lobby goes for contemporary elegance, with soft taupe walls, dark wood, an eye-catching globe-cluster chandelier, and groupings of clean-lined furniture in shades of taupe and muted teal with eggplant accents.

Getting Around

The hotel is just steps from the Hazard Center Trolley Station. The trolley’s Green Line connects to Fashion Valley, Old Town, Little Italy, Santa Fe Depot, Seaport Village, the Gaslamp Quarter, and the Convention Center. From the Santa Fe Depot, you can catch Amtrak trains (including the Coast Starlight, which runs up the entire West Coast) or the Coaster, which services coastal communities to the north. If you’re exploring by car, the Doubletree by Hilton San Diego - Mission Valley is close to Interstate 8. Take I-8 East to connect with 163 South, which will take you to Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo (it also has an exit for the airport). Take I-8 West to go to SeaWorld. Take I-8 West to merge onto I-5 North, which will take you to La Jolla and other coastal communities to the north. You can also pick up I-5 South from I-8 West.

Restaurants

There are a number of popular chain restaurants a short walk from the hotel (Denny’s, Applebee’s, Cheesecake Factory, King’s Fish House) that make things simpler when it comes to feeding a picking family. For a taste of the type of affordable Mexican food that San Diegans of every background like to eat, check out Roberto’s (5-minute walk). The burritos, stuffed with fillings and wrapped in a fresh, lightly grilled tortilla, are especially satisfying, and there’s a salsa bar with pickled carrots and jalapenos. At Fashion Valley, Stacked: Food Well Built (10-minute walk) is a mouthful to say, but it’s also a sleek mall eatery that delivers a good mouthful of grub, all ordered via electronic tablet. The menu includes a large menu of comfort food like generously topped nachos, burgers, and pizza; you can also get a salad if you must.

Bars

Mission Valley isn’t exactly nightlife central -- if that’s important to you, consider staying somewhere else or be prepared to drive (and definitely have a designated driver). The Gaslamp Quarter is a 15-minute drive or cab ride away. There you’ll find everything from bumping nightclubs (check out San Diego Club Crawl if you want to hit up a few spots in a night without waiting in line) to the uber-kitschy Trailer Park After Dark (15-minute drive), an underground bar with retro trailer-park decor -- plastic-covered couches, bar stools made from presumably abandoned shopping carts, and lots of fun retro memorabilia -- and cheekily named nibbles and drinks. Laid-back ‘burb Pacific Beach (15-minutes) also has a lot of nightlife variety. A bit closer to the hotel, Gordon Biersch (5-minute drive) brewery in Mission Valley and the Old Tequila Factory Restaurant & Cantina (10-minute drive) in Old Town San Diego are also options.
