Fodor's Expert Review
A 10-minute walk from the ferry landing, the bayside Coronado Island Hotel & Resort is close to San Diego’s attractions but secluded enough to feel like a true resort. From the reliable Marriott brand, the recently refreshed hotel features chic modern rooms, an on-site restaurant, three pools, and a spa. It’s also a five-minute walk from the beach.
Tip During the summer, Coronado offers a free shuttle that stops at the Marriott Coronado Hotel and services the ferry landing, city center, the Hotel del Coronado, and more (hotel parking starts at $31 per day).

Room
Renovated rooms are elegant, bright, and modern, with clean-lined wood furniture, crisp white linens, classy beachy accents, and a palette of soft blues and beiges inspired by the California coastline. Post-refresh bonus: convenient outlets for your devices. Rooms feature balconies with bay, resort, or bridge views.
Bathroom
Clean, spacious bathrooms feature soothing hues, ample counter space, and a separate shower and oversized tub.
Lobby
The lobby features comfy seating in soothing blues and greens, warm wood accents, and a lounge area with a bar and flatscreen TVs.
Pool
It’s annoying when you show up at a sparkling hotel pool on a sunny day only to find there’s not a single available chaise in sight. And forget about taking a semi-peaceful dip in the water. Your chances of poolside bliss are better at this resort, which has three pools on its grounds, including the sprawling Riviera Pool with views of the bay and city skyline, plenty of lounge chairs, and a hot tub.
Spa
The 5,500-square-foot Spa at Coronado Island facility includes 10 treatment rooms and an outdoor spa garden. The newly renovated spa offers facials, massages, and body treatments. Sun, sand, and spa? Sign us up!
Gym
The hotel’s fitness center features cardio equipment, weight machines, an outdoor lap pool, and fitness classes. There are also jogging and bike paths around the island, as well as places to rent bikes, jet skis, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and more.
Dining
The hotel’s Current restaurant features sweeping views of the bay and city skyline, with a California coastal menu that emphasizes seasonal local ingredients. Prefer to dine alfresco on a beautiful afternoon? Try to snag one of Current’s patio tables. If you’re with a larger group, there’s even a table with a fire pit at the center.
Tip If you only have a couple of days on the island, there are much better dining options.
Drinking
The hotel’s Tides lobby bar serves up light bites alongside San Diego craft beer and creative cocktails like the Cape Coronado (mandarin vodka, cranberry juice, and strawberry puree).

Getting Around
The Coronado Ferry Landing, where you can cross the bay on a passenger ferry or water taxi for hire, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Once Downtown, public transit options abound, including buses, trolleys, and trains. If you plan to visit a lot of places in sprawling San Diego, it’s much easier to have a car to get around. To drive to Downtown, cross the Coronado Bridge (CA-75 N), and connect with Interstate 5 North.
Restaurants
In a classic European bistro setting -- think marble counters, cafe chairs, and gooseneck lights -- Coronado’s Tartine (10-minute walk) peddles flaky pastries, desserts, and light eats during the day and a small selection of simple entrees in the evening, including a delicious fisherman’s stew. It may be part of an upmarket chain (with most locations in California), but Il Fornaio (10-minute walk) doesn’t feel at all formulaic. The restaurant serves spot-on Italian cuisine, including pasta, pizza, seafood, and rotisserie and grill items. It’s the kind of place where locals are regulars.
