Why We Like It

In the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, the Andaz offers Hyatt-level luxury with on-trend boutique style. The rooftop pool and bar is one of the city’s see-and-be-seen hotspots, especially during the summer, with tons of dining, drinking, and shopping just steps from the hotel.

Fodor's Expert Review

Chic, modern, and filled with cool local art, this boutique property from the Hyatt is conveniently located in the city’s bustling Gaslamp Quarter. The hotel’s rooftop features a beautiful pool as well as a bar that’s seriously bumping on weekend nights (Prince Harry even partied here during a San Diego visit).

The long, rectangular rooftop pool looks out on a panorama of San Diego’s high-rises and Petco Park and features sleek chaises, clusters of seating, and a fire pit. You can even rent a private cabana with a flatscreen TV.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

San Diego is easiest explored by car, but public transit is still a great option. You can catch the San Diego Trolley at the Gaslamp Quarter Station, a 15-minute walk from the Andaz. The trolley’s Green Line services Seaport Village, Little Italy, and Old Town. Buses also service San Diego’s attractions; visit Metropolitan Transit System for up-to-date schedules and maps, as well as real-time arrival info. To explore the coastal communities to the north of Downtown, hop off the trolley at the historic Santa Fe Depot and catch the commuter Coaster train, which stops in Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. You can usually catch a cab for shorter rides in the Downtown area; car services like Lyft are also a popular choice.

Restaurants

Carne is king at the Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse (2-minute walk), an upscale churrascaria that dishes up exquisite cuts of meat. The ample buffet salad bar is also a draw (no, really!). Café 21 (2-minute walk) has a distinctly California vibe, dishing up healthy, organic fare and farm-to-bar cocktails. Check out the gorgeous living wall behind the bar.

Bars

Four words: Trailer Park After Dark (3-minute walk). It’s ridiculously kitschy--think vintage trailers, barstools made out of shopping carts, plastic-covered armchairs, TV trays, and lawn furniture. It’s also ridiculously fun. Custom cocktails have names like ‘Murica Mule and Dickle My Pickle. If that’s too lowbrow for your taste, head back to an even earlier era at Prohibition (5-minute walk). The speakeasy-style bar makes you work for it: Look for the door to Eddie O’Hare’s Law Office and the bar will flip a light switch to let you in. It’s a unique spot to enjoy cocktails and the occasional live performance.
