Why We Like It

Rimrock Ranch is the place to go when you want to feel like you are getting off the grid and away from society, but is still within 20 minutes of a major town and within an hour of Palm Springs. The modern elements and beauty in simplicity tend to attract a creative audience of writers, filmmakers, and musicians. We appreciate the ability to relax in an updated retro space where we can imagine what life would have been like had we been singing cowboys or pioneering ranchers and be grateful we are travelers instead.

Fodor's Expert Review

These high-end cabins rest atop the bluff on a former private 11-acre ranch that once was a retreat for Hollywood cowboys like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Up here, you’re off the beaten path: there’s little or no cell phone service at this rustic retreat. On your way up, you’ll pass historic Pioneertown, an old movie shooting set and now museum and kitschy attraction.

Room

The property features a mix of buildings, including a ranch house lodge, private cabins, and an Airstream trailer. The lodge is spacious, with dark wood furniture, white walls, a stone wall behind a chiminea-style fireplace, and other rustic touches befitting a western retreat. Cabins indulge in knotty pine wood paneling and Western and Hollywood decorative elements.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are modest but well-stocked. There is no bathroom in the Airstream.

Lobby

There’s no lobby at this hip experience, though there is a separate deck platform with Adirondack chairs from which to watch the sunset and take in the spectacular views of the surrounding area.

Pool

The above-ground pool, encased in a giant metal tub, is perfect for soaking after a long day of hiking.

Gym

You’re surrounded by the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve, so hiking trails are almost literally out the back door.

Dining

All units have kitchenettes with coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave; most spaces have full kitchens with cooking ranges.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

A car is required to get up to this secluded scenic paradise. The road is paved all the way to the top, so a standard rental will do just fine. Be aware that the road does a little bit of twisting and turning.

Restaurants

Pappy & Harriet’s (10-minute drive) in kooky Pioneertown offers lunch, dinner, a kid’s menu, as well as live entertainment on certain nights. Reservations recommended. Otherwise, you’ll travel quite a ways to get to a restaurant; it’s 20-30 minutes to get to the next town: Yucca Valley.

Bars

Aside from Pappy & Harriet’s—which has some terrific live music—the closest bars are down in the town of Yucca Valley, off Highway 62 (20- to 30-minute drive).
