Fodor's Expert Review Hacienda Temozón

Carretera 261, Km 182, Yucatán, 97825, Mexico Fodor's Choice

This converted hacienda, roughly 45 minutes by car to the south of Mérida, sits regally on a hilltop, creating an unforgettable first impression. Explore closer and the wide verandahs overlooking the lush grounds, mahogany furnishings, wooden doors, and original tile floors translate into a genteel, albeit relaxed, sophistication. Rooms have ceilings that are more than 20 feet high and beds stacked with piles of pillows; some also have marble tubs, hammocks, and plunge pools. The historic atmosphere only goes so far however; the rooms have modern amenities including flat-screen TVs and remote-controlled air-conditioning. Room No. 1 is decorated with antiques from the original hacienda and even has a telescope you can use to watch the stars. Machinery used to process the henequen, or sisal, that was once grown on the hacienda is located throughout the grounds and common areas. The property also has a spa, tennis courts, a chapel for weddings, and even a private cenote.
