Why We Like It

Because it shows that affordability and style can be compatible. It’s close to the beach and to the best shopping and dining options in the city. It feels like a cruise!

Fodor's Expert Review

Located just around the corner from the famous Quinta Avenida, Hotel Coco Rio offers great location and affordability but with style, which is not always the case in hotels of this category. Definitely, one of the best low-cost options for those looking to explore what Playa del Carmen has to offer.

You Should Know There is no parking available at Coco Rio, so looking for a nearby private parking lot may be necessary.

Room

The whole Hotel Coco Rio developed a boat-themed décor that is much better appreciated in the rooms. The color palette uses a variety of blue and green tones, and there are several pieces of softwood furniture and other accessories. Most rooms enjoy private balcony or terrace, and some even feature a hammock. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fan, Wi-Fi access and cable TV.

Tip For long stays, you may want to ask the staff about their apartment packages, which offer better value.

Bathroom

Coco Rio’s bathrooms have been nicely designed, with a fresh, modern outlook that suggests they have been renovated not long ago. The small-mosaic design of the walls work perfectly, the space is ample and some bathrooms even include bidet.

Lobby

Some may find Coco Rio’s lobby a bit naïve, with all that sailing paraphernalia, but it’s actually cute. The whimsical ambience of the place communicates the right impression of what to expect in this charming hotel.

Spa

The hotel counts with a beach front solarium where a diversity of massages can be provided upon request.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Hotel Coco Rio is located at the quiet end of La Quinta Avenida. You are still within walking distance to almost everything in downtown but without “enjoying” the buss 24/7. Cancun International Airport is just 50 minutes away and there are many forms of how to arrive to your hotel: taxis, shared vans or public ADO buses that will leave you at the bus terminal (8-minute drive). Walking will be the best way to explore the area; you may also rent a bike. The hotel offers organized tours to further points of interest such as Tulum Coba, Chichen-Itza and Isla Mujeres.

Restaurants

Piola (10-minute walk) is an Italian pizzeria restaurant with many other options. You will love its bright colors and Mexican decoration. Las Hijas de la Tostada (7-minute walk) is a fancier option with long history in town. If you ask a local person for recommendation, they will surely mention this Mexican eatery.

Bars

Although La Bodeguita del Medio (5-minute walk) is technically a restaurant, people choose it for its music and Mojitos. The best place to dance salsa in Playa. Cantina La 38 (10-minute walk) is a laid-back, top-style bar not on the beach but with hammocks and sand. A really good place to chill.
