Blue Sky Hotel

Carretera 307, km 237.5, Tulum, Quintana Roo 77760, Mexico

Why We Like It

Because you can do scuba diving in a cenote and kayaking in the Caribbean. The balconies of the second-level rooms have some outstanding views. We love the idea of borrowing a bike and exploring the area.

Fodor's Expert Review

Set between a famous cenote and the Caribbean Sea, Blue Sky is a small boutique hotel with an upscale personality and a laid-back attitude. The perfect mix for a property along Tulum’s shoreline. A quiet retreat with small doses of luxury, in what amounts to the now popular beach chic style.

Room

All rooms share a similar design with orange marble floors, white walls and wooden furnishings. Most come with wide floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open to gorgeous balconies or terraces with loungers, hammock and dazzling ocean views. All rooms feature air conditioning, Wi-Fi access and cable TV.

You Should Know Deluxe rooms not enjoy ocean views, instead they overlook the internal courtyard of the hotel.

Bathroom

The bathrooms of the Blue Sky hotel keep with the same combination of orange marble floor (and countertops), white walls and wooden furniture style of the rooms. All of them feature an enclosed shower with stained glass door. Overall, these are elegant bathrooms, but lacking on personality.

Lobby

Blue Sky’s lobby is just a small living area situated on the right hand side of the entrance, just between the bar and the front-desk, with a large spectacular smithy sun on its back and the Caribbean awaiting on the other side. A fresh spot with promising views.

Pool

A medium-sized, rounded, beachfront swimming pool is located in the center of the property, surrounded by rooms, garden and the ocean in the background. It’s a refreshing spot, no doubt about it, but a bit underwhelming. It lacks on imagination, it’s too simple and boring maybe.

Spa

A wide array of in-room or by-the-beach massages and treatments are available for Blue Sky’s guests, including mud massages and aromatherapy among others.

Dining

The restaurant is set under a big palapa, but extends beyond to the central courtyard of the hotel in a very casual open space setting. It serves a mix of international cuisine with Mexican dishes and Yucatanean influence. The wood-oven pizzas are pretty good too!

Drinking

The bar shares the restaurant’s facilities and offers the customary selection of national beers, big-brand spirits and a small but interesting wine list.

Beach

What separates Blue Sky from the rest is its excellent location between Cenote Manatí and the Caribbean Sea. If you’ve ever wanted to try snorkeling or scuba diving, this is the place to do it. The hotel offers different options, tours and the required equipment. Blue Sky also provides free of charge to its guests the use of bikes, kayaks and life jackets.

Tip How would you feel about visiting the famous Tulum Mayan ruins by boat and doing some snorkel in the Caribbean in the meantime?

Getting Around

The best way to get from Cancun International Airport (1.5 hour drive) is by car, so if you don’t have a one, you can rent one, and later use it to explore the area. There is also a first class ADO bus service that will take you to Tulum, and obviously you may rent a cab or a colectivo (mini-bus).

Restaurants

Restaurant Oscar & Lalo (10-minute drive) is an institution in Tulum, and has been serving quality Mexican food for decades, and La Colifata (20-minute drive) offers very chic Argentinean and Latin dishes and has a crowd of faithful followers.

Bars

Ciel Rose Sunset Bar (20-minute drive) has the best sunsets on the coast, apart from delicious cocktails and shots, and the Beached Bikini Bar and Grill (20-minute drive) is a picturesque bar where you can forget about shoes and civilization.
