Fodor's Expert Review Fonda El Refugio
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
When Judith van Beuren opened Fonda El Refugio in 1954, it was the first upscale restaurant in the city to celebrate humble Mexican culinary traditions, and it remains a true refuge amid the bustle of the Zona Rosa. Along with a varied regular menu of regional Mexican classics, there are both daily and seasonal specials; you might find huachinango a la veracruzana (red snapper bathed in a tomato sauce with capers and olives) or a rich manchamantel, one of Oaxaca's famed seven moles. Enjoy a café de olla (gently spiced coffee cooked in a clay pot and sweetened with brown sugar) after your meal.
