Dating from 1400, this grand country house 4 miles southeast of Abergavenny is set on 20 acres of well-tended grounds with lovely views of the Brecon Beacons. Take a sunset stroll down to the little 16th-century chapel before having a drink in the pleasant bar—if you're lucky you may spot bats flitting around in the twilight outside the window. The bedrooms are large and retain original details like marble fireplaces; a few have four-poster beds. There's a log fire in the lounge, and the terrace is perfect for afternoon tea. The restaurant serves outstanding modern Welsh cuisine.
