Amid slatted wood partitions modeled after those found in Kyoto temples, you can dine on an appealing mix of traditional Japanese dishes including tuna tataki, modern interpretations such as fried scallops with potato, miso puree, and truffle, and a tempting selection of sushi and sashimi. Enjoy your meal even more with a sake selected from one of the largest sake lists in Switzerland.
In the late 1600s, postal workers traveling the Oberland needed a place to eat and swap horses, and they found what they needed in this lumbering wood chalet, one of the oldest buildings in the area. Today the Amacher family taps into its 10 generations of experience running the place to serve outstanding Swiss specialties: Don't miss what could arguably be the country's best Suure Mocke, a tangy braised-meat dish that's marinated in wine and vinegar for two weeks, or opt for one of their traditional fondues, Röstis, or Swiss meat dishes. More than half the guests are locals who gather among the thick, lumpy walls of plastered river rock to sample about 30 wines, many of which are Swiss. Yummy desserts like apple pies and meringues are hard to pass up.
With a luxurious shady terrace spilling into the Höhematte in summer and mellow piano sounds enhancing the classically elegant interior, this café-restaurant serves rich, hot Swiss meals (as well as some Chinese and Thai dishes). The recipes may date all the way back to 1818, but most of the dishes are freshly made in-house on a daily basis; leave room for the chocolate specialties and pastries, like the glossy strawberry tarts, which you'll also find in the adjoining shop.
Choose between a marble-columned pizzeria in one wing, a Swiss-focused restaurant in another, and a terrace that stretches comfortably along the waterfront where you can enjoy food from both. The lake fish specialties are solid, but there is also a nice range of steaks, pastas, and salads, plus a children's menu.
Established in 1875, this old-world spot offers a well-balanced mix of tradition and modern comfort, with both a formal restaurant and the more laidback Chässtübli. Traditional Swiss cuisine emphasizes seasonal game and vegetable dishes, as well as a lengthy menu of fondue and Rösti (hash brown) creations. The Chässtübli's sunny front porch overlooks the street and is great for people-watching. Head inside for the restaurant's dining room, opening onto the main promenade.
In an airy dining room modernized with contemporary art, Chef Francesco De Bartolomeis prepares sophisticated Swiss cuisine with a twist, such as cheese and onion tart with raspberries and côte de veau cooked in hay from Gstaad, available as part of a four- or six-course menu or à la carte. The dishes change once a season, with many ingredients sourced from local producers, and can be paired with a fine selection of international wines (with plenty of Swiss choices, too).
Set in a rustic A-frame cabin on the main drag, this tiny pizza parlor is as cozy as they come. Rough-hewn floors accommodate ski boots, and a smattering of wooden tables share space with a huge iron cookstove where the owner produces fresh pizzas in three sizes (the smallest of which is more than enough for most people). In warmer weather you can sit in an attractive garden with mountain views. Its popularity outstrips its size, so enjoy the delicious smells while you wait.
See all the famed Berner Oberland peaks as you dine on a 007 burger or James Bond spaghetti at this revolving restaurant atop the Schilthorn, which makes a full rotation in 45 minutes. The food is better than it has to be, and most opt for the substantial James Bond brunch buffet, with a large selection of everything from pancakes to soups, served daily till 2 pm; otherwise, choose from a salad or soup buffet, cheese or meat platters, and eclectic dishes ranging from Swiss Rösti and pork schnitzel to hearty pastas.
At this carved-wood chalet dating from 1787, you can sit out on the flower-lined terrace and choose from many interpretations of Lake Brienz whitefish and perch. The menu also has a range of veal classics. If you want to linger, there are nine modern guest rooms, all with a bright and cheery feel.
This charming retro-style eatery, part of the bed-and-breakfast of the same name, serves up eggs, smoothie bowls, and sandwiches for breakfast and lunch at a lovely location along the Aare River. You can also swing by for cake and coffee, or order wine or local craft beer with snacks throughout the day.
