Valldemossa

The jumping-off point for a drive up the spectacular coast of the Tramuntana, this pretty little town, north of Palma, is famous for the vast complex of the Reial Cartuja monastery. Surrounded by natural beauty and stunning views, it was also here where Chopin spent the winter of 1838 with George Sand. As most tourists tend to bus in during the day for a few hours and leave, it is worth spending an evening in Valldemossa to soak up the true atmosphere of this beautiful village. At sundown, the quiet streets and plaças are a delight to wander through, flanked by sandy stone houses with green shutters and overflowing plant pots. A classical music festival paying tribute to Chopin (among other composers) is held every August, with most performances taking place in the Reial Cartuja monastery.
