Fodor's Expert Review Convento de San José

Ávila Church

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

A cluster of houses joined together, the convent was founded in the late 16th century by St. Teresa of Ávila and is still in use. You can see the kitchen, cloister, and so-called devil's staircase, from which Teresa fell and broke her arm in 1577. The complex also houses the Museo Teresiano, with musical instruments used by St. Teresa and her nuns (Teresa specialized in percussion).
