Fodor's choice

Some of Lanzarote's top artisan cheeses (and a wide selection of mainland European ones) are sold at this charming city-center shop.

Ahumadería de Uga

The hamlet of Uga is the improbable home of what's arguably Spain's finest smoked salmon producer. The Guerrero family won't relinquish its secret recipe, but what we know is that the salmon is imported from Scotland and Norway, cured with salt culled from nearby Janubio beach, and smoked over La Geria grapevines. The smoked fish is so delectable that the tiny shop sells more than 200 pounds of it each day.

Aloe Plus Lanzarote

A wide range of lotions, balms, and serums made from locally grown aloe vera are sold at this shop, which also has a small "museum" detailing the history and uses of the plant. There are other branches in Yaiza, Arrieta, Punta Mujeres, La Graciosa, and beyond.

Artenerife

Traditional crafts sold at this kiosk near the tourist office are made by local artisans and guaranteed by the island's government as productos artesanos. The selection includes calado—exquisitely embroidered linen tablecloths and place mats—and clay pottery made using the same methods as those used by the island's aboriginal settlers. (The Guanches didn't use potter's wheels; rather, they rolled the clay into churros, or cylindrical strips, and hand-kneaded these into bowls. Pebbles, branches, and shells were used to buff the results.)
