Outside of town, about 5 km (3 miles) from Gernika, lies the Urdaibai Natural Reserve. Stop here for a stroll through the Bosque de Oma, featuring rows of trees vividly painted by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola. It's a striking and successful marriage of art and nature. The nearby Cuevas de Santimamiñe have important prehistoric cave paintings that can be accessed virtually at a visitor center.
