Guadix

Today, Guadix—and the neighboring village of Purullena—is best known for its cave communities, though this was an important mining town as far back as 2,000 years ago and has its fair share of monuments, including a cathedral (built 1594–1706) and a 9th-century Moorish alcazaba. Around 2,000 caves were carved out of the soft-sandstone mountains, and most are still inhabited. Far from being troglodytic holes-in-the-wall, they are well furnished and comfortable, with a pleasant year-round temperature; a few serve as hotels. A small cave museum, Cueva Museo, is in Guadix's cave district. Toward the town center, the Cueva la Alcazaba has a ceramics workshop. A number of private caves have signs welcoming you to inspect the premises, though a tip is expected if you do. Purullena, 6 km (4 miles) from Guadix, is also known for ceramics.
