Barca d'Alva/Castelo Rodrigo

These two small villages, a stone's throw from the Spanish border, make good jumping-off points for visiting the other Douro River villages, and even for crossing over into Spain. Between sips of wine and bites of bacalhau, see prehistoric rock art, the ruins of an ancient fortress, and an 18th-century church.
