Fodor's Expert Review Pousada de São Gonçalo
Rua Central de Ansiães, Amarante, Porto, 4600-520, Portugal
This modern hotel 20 km (12 miles) east of Amarante is in the dramatic Serra do Marão range, at an altitude of nearly 3,000 feet; the rugged terrain and stone exterior are matched by a rustic interior, with wood furniture, a large fireplace, and tile floors. Despite its size, the hotel (also known by its previous name of Pousada do Marao) has an outdoor pool and a spa (not included) with a whirlpool tub, sauna, and steam bath. Staff can help in arranging sightseeing tours and other activities such as hiking and biking. The panoramic restaurant serves such satisfying regional fare as caldeirada de cabrito (goat stew). Include a bottle of red wine from the excellent list and regional sweets to finish. Or opt for the three-course set menu (€25 including drinks).
PROS
- a range of outdoor activities
- restaurant offers well-priced regional fare
- pleasant spa area
CONS
- reachable only by car
- less pleasant in winter
- next to a highway
