Fodor's Expert Review Lloyd Hotel

Oostelijke Handelskade 34, Amsterdam, North Holland, 1019 BN, Netherlands

A former halfway house for (mostly Jewish) emigrants headed to South America, this bohemian hotel is well suited to its current quirky incarnation as an offbeat design showcase, but visitors need to be aware that rooms range from bare-bones to fairly luxe, and features may include such oddities as log walls, ceiling swings, and bathtubs in the middle of living rooms. Guest quarters in the listed landmark vary in size and price, from snug alcoves with shared bathrooms to enormous penthouse harbor-view suites, but everyone enjoys the soaring, white-walled restaurant and adjacent sun-drenched patio, as well as the fittingly unusual public spaces found on each floor, including a library and a kids' playroom.

PROS

  • plenty of original 1920s architectural features
  • rooms priced for all budgets
  • interesting crowd

CONS

  • slightly out-of-the-way location
  • hallways a bit dark and dormlike
  • hotel's quirkiness not for everyone
