Maldron Hotel Newlands Cross

Newlands Cross at Naas Rd., Dublin, Co. Dublin, 22, Ireland, Dublin, Ireland

Why We Like It

It does what it says on the tin - reliable, family-friendly accommodation at a good price with a pretty tasty breakfast on the edge of the city. Worth considering if you're heading out in the car on a tour of the rest of the Emerald Isle.

Fodor's Expert Review

This four-story franchise hotel on the southwest outskirts of the city is, in two words, cheap and cheerful. It's particularly worth considering if you're planning to travel to the west or southwest of Ireland and you don't want to deal with Dublin's crazy morning traffic. The hotel is emulating the formula popularized by Jurys Inns, in which rooms—here each has at least a double bed and a single bed or sofa bed—are a flat rate for up to three adults or two adults and two children.

Tip The hotel is good for families and guests with disabilities, because of its rooms designed for guests with different needs. It has a number of fully accessible rooms.

Room

Rooms are standard budget hotel fare, although the yellow tones of the Maldron are actually quite modern and appealing. They offer the amenities you'd expect, including tea and coffee making facilities, irons and ironing boards, and flatscreen TVs.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are similarly standard and unremarkable, but clean and functional.

Lobby

The hotel lobby actually has a little more pizzazz than the average chain hotel, with plants, symmetrical pattern detailing, and modern studded armchairs.

Gym

The hotel has a fitness suite that all guests can use.

Dining

Similarly to the lobby, there's a more individual vibe here than in the average chain, with good coffee and a reasonable breakfast. Plus, the grain & grill restaurant has a reasonable a la carte menu, with family specials - which is lucky, because there isn't much else around nearby.

Drinking

There's a comprehensive bar menu for the bar and lounge area too, which is also a pleasant enough space.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is on the edge of the city, but you wouldn't choose it if you were looking for something central. It's designed for drivers really - there's a car park - although the Red Cow Luas stop is a 15-minute walk.

Restaurants

Joel's Restaurant (20-minute walk, or 5-minute drive) is an amiable family-friendly spot with puzzles and coloring for the little ones, and pizza and cocktails for the grown-ups. Or treat yourself to gorgeous food in a lovely setting at Delahunt (26-minute drive) in the city center, near St Stephen's Green.

Bars

Bars and pubs are scarce in this area, but Boomers Bar (9-minute drive), admittedly on a retail park, is not bad - live music at weekends and good pub grub at a well-renovated old boozer. Or in the center, finish your day off with cocktails at The Liquor Rooms (34-minute drive), one of the city's best cocktail bars in the cellar of a hotel owned by Bono and The Edge from U2.
