When to Go

The Northern Cycladic experience is different in summer compared to winter, however, it is not as noticeable as in other island groups. Mykonos, Tinos, and Syros are, to differing degrees, self-sufficient and are not completely reliant on a couple of months of tourism in summer to survive. Mykonos's shoulder seasons, in particular, are stretching so that only November through to March is relatively quiet. Nature-lovers, hikers, and cultural travelers are best served by coming in spring and fall, when the temperatures are lower and tourist numbers fewer. May and June can be especially rewarding with flower-filled fields, warming seas, long bright days, and deserted beaches. The workers are not burnt-out either and service can be better than in the packed summer. Be aware that out of season ferry and air travel may be curtailed and that many hotels, restaurants, shops, and museums are closed, but your reward can be to see the natural beauty of the islands without the madding crowds.
