A splendid base for exploring the area, this ivy-covered property sits on the edge of Helmsley's market square. Originally a coaching inn, the hotel is actually comprised of three buildings: one Georgian, one Elizabethan, and a half-timbered house that dates back to the 15th-century. Cozy rooms overlook the square, a lane, or a fine walled garden. The restaurant serves sophisticated Modern British dishes, and there are packages that include two- or three-course  dinners. Bed-and-breakfast rates are not available for Saturday nights.
