Fodor's Expert Review ABode Exeter
Cathedral Close, Exeter, Devon, EX1 1HD, England
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Claimed to be the first inn in England to be described as a "hotel," the 1769 Royal Clarence (the old name still appears outside) has been transformed into a strikingly modern boutique hotel. It retains its ancient lines (including narrow corridors) while offering thoroughly up-to-date rooms. On the ground floor are two contrasting restaurants—formal and casual—run by noted chef Michael Caines.
PROS
- superb central location
- wonderful views from front
- friendly young staff
CONS
- some rooms are small and viewless
- occasional noise disturbance from outside
